renewables and sustainability

Renewable energy has great potential to meet our nation’s demand for power with a much smaller environmental footprint than fossil fuel- or nuclear-derived power.

Renewables can also significantly address the issue of energy security by providing a distributed, diversified energy infrastructure. According to a White House study, areas with good wind resources have the potential to supply up to 20% of U.S. electricity consumption.

According to the National Renewable Energy Lab, solar photovoltaic modules covering 0.4% of U.S. land area could supply all of the nation’s electricity.

“The American Solar Energy Society (www.ases.org) strongly encourages making efficiency improvements [i.e., lighting retrofits] before installing renewables. By improving your energy efficiency, you reduce the size (and cost) of the renewable energy system needed… Improving your energy efficiency is the first and most important step toward adopting renewable energy.”
